How to keep a construction site clear and organised

Matthew Olson October 31, 2021 Home Improvement Leave a Comment

There is an awful lot that takes place on a construction site. They are busy, dusty, messy places to work and managing one comes with its own responsibilities and stress. A construction site generates a huge amount of waste and one of the hardest aspects of site management is dealing with all of this waste. When waste builds up on a site, it can cause issues for health and safety, as well as slowing down work, preventing access and making the whole project more inefficient. Here are some tips on why a construction site should be clear and organised:

  1. Safety

Construction sites are dangerous places and a lot of workplace injuries on sites are a result of obstacles and waste being in the way. When goods and materials are not managed properly and things are left lying about, trips, falls and other accidents are more likely. An organised and clear site allows workers improved access, the ability to find things easily and a much safer environment to work in. Access is also improved for suppliers, deliveries and contractors to be able to move safely around the site.

  1. Efficiency

When a site is easier to operate in, everyone’s work can be just that bit more productive. One way to encourage a clear site is to use skip hire. This is an economical way of managing waste and avoids the risk of further delay to a project through accident or inefficiency. 1. Reputation

For construction, the appearance of a site is also important. Potential clients could visit and if they see a messy, disorganised worksite then they will be less than impressed. A shoddy haphazard site doesn’t speak well of the work ethic or sense of responsibility or pride of the management. Keeping it ship shape will reflect well on the company and make them more of an attractive prospect for future jobs by looking professional.

Tips for managing waste on a construction site:

  • Avoiding excess waste can be achieved by ensuring materials and parts purchased are good quality. This will reduce the amount of wasted or damaged material and scrap metal lying around.
  • Consider the benefits of purchasing materials with less packaging.
  • Measure materials accurately so as not to over purchase and end up with costly wastage.
  • Ensure any tools or equipment that is not being used is stored away safely and not left lying around to cause a hazard.
  • Arrange waste disposal measures prior to commencement of the project. That way, the site starts out on the right foot and it’s easier to keep organised. Think about the size of the units you will require so as to be sure there is ample space for the amount of waste that will be generated.
  • Designate a specified area for waste disposal and ensure everyone knows where it is and what is expected of them.
  • Once the project is complete, clean the area, give it a thorough sweep and arrange for the waste to be collected.
