Six tips for freelance journalists

Niru Walker February 20, 2025 Lifestyle Leave a Comment

The 2020 pandemic is blamed for many of our modern problems; however, it also smuggled in some benefits. Working from home felt more suitable for many people, while others didn’t have a choice. Freelance journalism seemingly sits right at the crossroads of these two factors.

Whether you are here by choice or necessity, we have six of the best bits of advice to succeed as a freelance journalist.

  • 1. Community and network
  • 2. Let the world know
  • 3. Ditch pitches
  • 4. Embrace your freedom
  • 5. Search outside the box
  • Deliver on promises

1. Community and network

We often envision freelance writers as deskbound, housebound loners clicking away on their keyboards; however, this doesn’t – and shouldn’t – have to be the case. Finding like minded people, whether through events or online groups, can help you establish a better reach for your writing and keep you from that isolating image in your mind.

2. Let the world know

Similar to our previous pointer, it is worth announcing your role to anyone and everyone you are connected to online. Letting people know your skills and experience can help draw traffic towards your services, bringing recognition instead of hunting for it yourself.

If you are planning on a switch but feel inexperienced, you can find plenty of journalism courses online through providers such as https://schoolofjournalism.co.uk.

3. Ditch pitches

Pitches are great for getting your ambitions across; however, being ghosted can leave you demoralised. Instead, agreeing to assignments brought to you – usually through the connections you make – will get you more reliable and sustainable work. Don’t neglect pitches altogether, though.

4. Embrace your freedom

The lack of a rigid schedule can allow for breaks and a workflow that actually flows around your life. Find imagination and solutions to problems when you are away from your desk.

5. Search outside the box

Not every gig you do will be a big-name legacy piece, which is fine. Think of all the universities, medical practices, and fitness centres that offer magazines and newsletters and how you can help.

Deliver on promises

This one speaks for itself. Meet deadlines, keep work error-free, and build a warm, professional service for people to return to.
