As delicious as croissants are on their own, the right filling will make them even more irresistible. Here we share four unexpected croissant fillings for you to try.
1. Croque Madame Croissant
A Croque Madame is a classic French dish that’s essentially a grilled ham and cheese sandwich topped with a fried egg. The French classic gets a twist in this savoury snack.
Fill a croissant with slices of ham, a generous layer of béchamel sauce, and grated Gruyere cheese. After quickly melting the cheese in the oven or under a grill, top it off with a fried egg.
The addition of the fried egg on top distinguishes it from its counterpart, the Croque Monsieur, and gives it its name, as the egg is said to resemble a lady’s hat. The combination of the croissant’s flaky layers and the creamy, rich béchamel makes this a breakfast option worth waking up for.
2. Ice Cream and Nutella
If you’re planning office lunch catering from a provider such as Crumbs Delivered and want to impress, croissants are an excellent choice.
For a dessert-style croissant, few things can beat the luxury of ice cream with Nutella. Split a croissant in half and spread a thick layer of Nutella inside. Add a scoop of your favourite ice cream – vanilla, hazelnut, or chocolate will work especially well. For a little extra, garnish with chopped nuts or a drizzle of chocolate syrup.
3. Croissant Bostock and Boozy Cherries
Bostock is a classic French pastry made by topping stale brioche with almond cream and baking it. Try it with a croissant base by spreading a layer of almond cream/ frangipane on a halved croissant, then top with cherries soaked in brandy or kirsch. Bake until the almond cream is golden and slightly caramelised.
4. Full English Croissant
Fill your croissant pastry with crispy bacon, a sausage, and a soft-cooked egg. Consider adding a spoonful of baked beans or a sprinkle of grated cheddar to tie everything together. Wrap the croissant in foil and bake briefly to blend the flavours.
