We all hope we never find ourselves in a survival situation that is extreme, but those who have experienced it have incredible stories to share. Here are some inspiring stories of human ingenuity, and how people have survived against all odds.
Harrison Okene
Harrison Okene’s situation is truly a nightmare. Harrison Okene was sitting in the toilet when his boat capsized off the coast of Nigeria. Harrison tried to get out of the boat, but it began filling up with water. He miraculously found himself in a 4 foot air bubble. Rescue divers discovered him after he’d given up all hope. It’s incredible that he survived. No surprise that he has vowed never to enter the water again. Juliane Koepcke
Juliane survived a plane accident over the Peruvian rainforest, but then she had to survive in the rainforest. She was the sole survivor and had a broken collarbone. She found a stream, and waded downstream with a little candy in her pockets. As she fought through the forest for nine days, a wound on her left arm was infested by maggots. Forestry workers found her and transported her to hospital by air.
Robertson Family
In 1972, a Scottish family used their savings to buy a schooner. They set out on a journey around the globe. A hole was punched in the side of the boat as the family came across a pod of killer whales a few hundred miles off of the coast of the Galapagos Islands. They were left with an inflatable raft and less than one week’s food. The family survived on rainwater and turtle hunting. The raft became unsustainable after a few weeks and they were left with a 10 foot dinghy. They were discovered about five weeks after the attack by Japanese fishermen.
