A number of different faults can trigger warning lights on your Toyota. In some cases the problem is with the steering rack.
The EPS Warning Light
When an electric power steering system fails on a Toyota, it can trigger an EPS warning light on the dashboard. Failure of the steering rack can cause this type of warning light to appear as the faulty rack can affect the signal that is sent to the power steering control unit.
The Steering Angle Sensor
Your Toyota’s Steering Angle Sensor is damaged. This sensor reads the angle of your wheels. When there is play in your Toyota’s steering rack or it has moved due to wear, the Steering Angle Sensor will start to read an incorrect angle, and will log a fault with your Toyota’s ECU.
Low or Contaminated Power Steering Fluid
Fluid-related warning lights can also indicate problems with hydraulic Toyota power steering systems, for example, there is a warning light for the fluid. This warning light is activated if the fluid level falls (for example, as a result of a leaking rack seal) and also if the fluid becomes contaminated. Here, it is essential to check the reservoir for discolouration as well as the current level. For more on this, take a look at https://westernpowersteering.co.uk/vehicles/toyota/.
Torque Sensor Faults
Torque Sensor – This is a new sensor that has been fitted to some Toyota models. It is used to measure the amount of effort that is required to steer the car. In a worn steering rack, the amount of effort required to turn the wheels is distributed unevenly. The torque sensor picks up on this and triggers a warning light.
The VSC or Traction Control Light
On the few models fitted with Vehicle Stability Control, VSC warning lights can be triggered by the steering rack sending faulty data to the system. Often triggered with no other problem with the tires or brakes.
Multiple Lights Together
When multiple lights are on at the same time, then most likely the problem is with the steering rack itself. Below is a link that explains how to check / repair a Toyota steering rack. uk/vehicles/toyota/.
A single warning light may have a simple cause, but a combination of warning lights indicates a more complex problem that requires investigation as soon as possible.
