How to Spot Poor Cardboard Packaging Before Ordering
When you’re ordering cardboard packaging in bulk, the poor quality cardboard can be seriously damaging to your products. And even more damaging to your wallet. Here’s how to spot poor cardboard packaging before you order it.
Check the Board Grade and Flute Type
Make sure that the supplier can confirm the Board Grade and the Flute Type in writing, and cross check this with the sample(s) that you have been provided with. A Single-Wall B-Flute Box is a completely different animal to a Single-Wall C-Flute Box.
Test Edge Crush and Burst Resistance
Press the edge of the cardboard sample firmly until it starts to buckle. This will give you an idea of whether the cardboard will withstand crushing before buckling. Also ask the supplier for formal test results (to the relevant international standards for corrugated board testing) for the packaging cardboard that you are intending to use.
Look at the Print Quality on the Liner
Print has to be registered well onto the facing paper. Faint printing, patchy coverage, and rough uneven surface to the touch indicate low-grade facing paper. Do your fingers travel smoothly or get caught on uneven surfaces when you run them over the surface?
Ask About Moisture Resistance Ratings
Check if the cardboard packaging can withstand moisture in cold storage, when left outside, in damp warehouses. Check the moisture resistance rating of the Cardboard Packaging.
Read Test Certificates Carefully
Test Certificates clearly state the test method, the date of test and the grade of cardboard that has been tested. Anything less is valueless and you should insist that the supplier provides you with the actual figures.
Looking for problems in cardboard packaging samples costs nothing and can save you lots of trouble before you have paid for them.
