Secret book design tips that experts use

Designing a book isn’t just about choosing a nice font and putting a cover on it. There’s a whole world of tricks that make a book look professional, inviting, and impossible to put down. Here are some of the secrets that designers in the UK swear by.

  • Consistency, consistency, consistency

White space is your friend

Don’t cram every page with text. Let the margins breathe. A reader subconsciously relaxes when there’s room around the words, and it makes your content feel more polished. Typography matters more than you think, too. Experts often mix two complementary fonts – one for headings, another for body text. But keep it simple. Too many fonts are amateurish. Also, line spacing is key. Looser lines are easier on the eye, especially in long reads.

Then there’s the cover trick

The spine is often overlooked, but it’s the first thing people see. A clean, readable spine, even with just the title and author, can make a book pop. And don’t forget texture. A matte or soft-touch finish can make your book feel premium without costing a fortune. People really do tend to judge a book by its cover, so the design needs to be top quality.

There are book printers Gloucester such as https://wheatleyprinters.co.uk/printing-services/marketing-materials/book-printers/gloucester/ who can assist with your printing needs.

Consistency, consistency, consistency

Colour palettes, heading styles and chapter layouts should be kept uniform. Inconsistencies jump out and can make even great content feel messy. An unexpected chapter opener, a small illustration, or a drop cap can make flipping the pages feel like discovering treasure.
