5 common crochet mistakes to avoid

Niru Walker July 12, 2024 Reviews Leave a Comment

Even the most experienced crocheters can run into problems. Mistakes are a natural part of the learning process, and recognising them is the first step towards improving your skills. Here are five crochet mistakes to watch out for:

1. The Project Keeps Getting Bigger

One of the most common issues crocheters face is their project unintentionally becoming wider. This usually happens when you aren’t counting your stitches and end up adding extra stitches accidentally. To avoid this, continue counting your stitches throughout the project to make sure you have the correct number.

2. Misunderstanding UK and US Terms

The abbreviations used in crochet patterns can differ slightly between the UK and the US. In US patterns, “sc” stands for single crochet, the simplest stitch. In UK patterns, the equivalent stitch is called double crochet and is abbreviated as “dc”

  1. Only Crocheting the Front Loop

Crocheting into only the front loop of your stitches can create a ribbed effect and change the texture and shape of your project. To avoid this mistake, make sure you pay close attention to the pattern to see which loops you should be working into.

    4. Using a Yarn That Is a Different Weight

Using yarn of the wrong weight will significantly affect the size and appearance of your finished project. Always use the recommended yarn weight for your pattern.

Check your gauge by making a gauge swatch to ensure your tension matches the pattern’s requirements. Why not try some crochet blanket kits, such as those at https://www.woolcouturecompany.com, to get you started on the right foot?

    5. Not Counting the Rows While You Are Working

Losing track of your rows can make your project uneven. It’s easy to continue repeating the mistake too, until your entire project is wrong. Use a row counter to help you keep an accurate count of your rows or mark your rows with a stitch marker or safety pin in every tenth row to make counting easier.

By avoiding these common mistakes, you’ll be well on your way to creating beautiful crochet projects.
