Are solar panels sustainable?

Solar energy is indefinitely sustainable. It is a natural form of renewable energy whereby electricity is derived by harnessing the power of the sun; however, the technology that allows this transformation to occur raises some interesting questions.

Are solar panels good for the environment?

Solar panels use photovoltaics to convert the sun’s energy into usable electricity, reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and nuclear, and generate no carbon emissions. This, of course, is better for the environment; however, solar panels must be manufactured, which is where the line becomes blurred

How are solar panels manufactured?

Photovoltaic solar panels use quartz, aluminium, copper, silver, and glass in their manufacturing process. Sourcing these materials has harmful environmental effects. Many of these materials have a finite lifetime and cannot currently be recycled, raising the question of what happens to them at the end of their life.

Solar panels installed on homes often generate more energy than homeowners can use, so battery storage systems are becoming ever more common. These batteries use cobalt and lithium; again, these do not have great environmental credentials.

Other areas of concern involve the transport and manufacture of the raw materials.

Should you have solar panels installed?

The environmental impact of solar panels is heavily frontloaded. UK homeowners should be aware that UK solar panel manufacturers are legally obliged to collect and recycle decommissioned solar panels at their end of life

This means that once installed on a property, solar panels will generate clean electricity for up to 30 years before being appropriately recycled. Homeowners will therefore benefit from long-term cost savings, energy independence, and the reassurance that although the sourcing and manufacturing of their solar panels has had an environmental impact, it is offset by a long-term reduction in fossil fuel use.

To ensure your move to renewable energy is as environmentally beneficial as possible, you should source your solar panels from a reputable UK firm to ensure they will be collected and recycled at the end of their life.

In conclusion, no practice is perfect, but solar panels offer an excellent alternative to fossil fuels.
