Why is it important to clean a bathroom drain?

Have you ever stopped to think how much dirt literally goes down the drain while we take a shower? Skin and hair fat, hair, sweat…

And a lot of this dirt ends up accumulating on the walls of the drain, contributing to it becoming clogged or with impaired water flow.

Another problem with dirt accumulating in the drain is the proliferation of microorganisms, such as bacteria and fungi. These tiny beings have a veritable feast at their disposal, feeding on dirt and producing gases.

These gases often end up leaving the bathroom with a bad smell, similar to the smell of sewage.

Want another super nasty inconvenience from a dirty drain? The bugs. A drain that is not cleaned periodically is an invitation for the appearance of flies and terrible cockroaches.

Convinced that keeping your drain clean is important? So now come learn how to do this cleaning.

How often do you need to clean the bathroom drain?

Ideally, the bathroom drain should be given a heavy cleaning once a month.

But weekly it is indicated that you throw some bleach or vinegar down the drain to help eliminate bacteria and bad smell.

What to use to clean the bathroom drain?

The first and most important thing you need to provide for cleaning the bathroom drain is gloves.

Remember that this is a very popular place for bacteria and other microorganisms, so it’s best to avoid direct contact with them.

Next, get a screwdriver (if your drain is screwed into the floor), a long-handled brush (like those used to clean the toilet), and your favorite cleaning products, from disinfectant and bleach to vinegar. and bicarbonate.

Remove coarse dirt first

After separating all the necessary materials for cleaning the drain, open the lid, put on the gloves, and remove the thick dirt first.

And what would that thick dirt be?

Strands of hair, leftover soap, and even small objects that, by chance, ended up going down the drain, like children’s toys.

Use a piece of wire to help remove this dirt.

It is also worth having a bag on hand to throw all this dirt and not contaminate the floor of the box.

How to clean bathroom drain? 3 methods to try

Once you remove the tick, clean the drain more thoroughly. For this, you can choose one of the three techniques that we are going to present below. Look:

Bleach

  • Bleach is great for cleaning and disinfecting bathroom drains. The cheap and easily available product must be applied directly into the drain.
  • You can apply it purely to enhance the effect.
  • Let the bleach act for about 20 to 30 minutes. Then open the shower to wash the drain and eliminate the product.
  • Complete the cleaning by pouring a few drops of detergent into the drain and scrubbing with the long-handled brush.
  • To finish and help remove grease plaques in the innermost part of the plumbing, do the following: boil about a liter of water and pour it down the drain.
  • Then close the drain with the cap and that’s it.

Disinfectant

  • Another simple and easy product to clean the bathroom drain is disinfectant. It’s not as potent as bleach, but it helps clean drains that aren’t too dirty.
  • Let’s say it works well for cases where the drain already undergoes periodic cleaning.
  • Start by pouring about a capful of disinfectant down the drain. Wait about 15 minutes and rinse.
  • Finish cleaning with boiling water and a few drops of neutral detergent.

Vinegar and bicarbonate

  • There’s no way to talk about cleaning and cleaning without mentioning the most incredible duo in the world: vinegar and baking soda.
  • Together they are perfect. Vinegar eliminates odors and helps remove grease thanks to its acidity, while baking soda kills germs and bacteria.
  • All this in a very cheap and, best of all, sustainable way, since both ingredients do not contaminate or pollute the environment.
  • But for this duo to work, you have to follow the right order. First, pour about half a cup of baking soda down the drain.
  • Wait a few minutes and add half a cup of vinegar.
  • At that moment you will see the reaction between the two products take place. Do not panic. It’s normal.
  • Let this mixture act inside the drain for about ten minutes.
  • After that time rinse with boiling water. You can still complete the cleaning by dripping drops of neutral detergent into the drain and scrubbing with the brush.

Keep the bathroom drain clean

Clean and fragrant drain, right? Now it’s time to learn how to keep it that way. For this, note the tips:

  • Whenever you wash your hair, comb it beforehand to prevent excess hair from falling down the drain;
  • But if even so, some strands fall out, which is normal, remember to remove them as soon as you finish the bath;
  • Soap leftovers are great for clogging the drain. Then, when they are at the end and without conditions of use, throw them away in the basket or, if you want to take advantage of them, place them inside the bath sponge;
  • Guide children during the bath so they don’t throw objects into the drain;
  • The musketeer screen helps to prevent larger dirt from passing into the drain. It’s worth installing one;
  • Weekly throw a handful of salt, bicarbonate, or even bleach down the drain. Leave for a few minutes and rinse with boiling water. This little mixture will keep the drain clean longer until the day of the next cleaning;
