What are the Different Types of Drainage?

The four main types of drainage in the UK are slope, downspout, surface and subsurface. Both are used to remove water and guide it to its designated location. Surface water includes rain and runoff from roofs, downspouts and gutter systems. Foul water is water that seeps into drains from showers and toilets. Both types of drainage are vital for the preservation of water.

A downspout drain is a pipe that connects to a building’s gutter system. These pipes may be round or rectangular and are typically made of aluminum or plastic. You can even replace the downspout pipes with a different style to match your house’s exterior decor. Regardless of the type of drainage system you choose, the goal is to keep water from damaging your home’s foundation.

Open drains are also classified by depth. The shallow open drains are typically shallow, while the medium-depth open drains are deeper. They are designed to direct water to larger streams. However, they are primarily used for temporary drainage, and can’t handle large amounts of water.

Subsurface drainage systems help farmers and landowners conserve soil nutrients and prevent soil saturation. This improves the quality of fodder produced and reduces crop losses and the stress placed on farm operators. A properly drained field will preserve the soil and allow improved pasture species to grow. A properly constructed waterway will also help prevent soil erosion, and will provide relief from flooding.

The main types of drainage include surface drainage, slope drainage, and subsurface drainage. A slope drain will redirect water away from a building and landscaping while guiding it down a slope. These systems are made of concrete, steel, or plastic pipes that are usually covered with a grate. French drains are the most common drainage systems. These systems are designed to divert water away from a home. When rain falls, the water flows into a gravel-filled trench. The water then drains away from the house and is transferred to a drainage ditch or dry well. The gravel helps keep water from pooling around the foundation. Subsurface drainage systems are designed to remove water from a structure below the top layer of soil. They are typically made of buried pipes or ditches that lead to a large collector drain.
